Silver Membership - Youth Batting Development Program
You would of heard the phrase, ‘do as you have always done and get
where you have always got’, at some time. If not, you have now.
The youth batting development program was designed to change the way we
develop our youth cricketers. To be more precise it has been designed
to give the whole process of developing young cricketers a structure
rather than the process being very blasé.
The current methods used in the development process are very similar to
the training methods used at senior levels. Batting and bowling in nets
followed by some fielding and there you have it.
No definite pattern or process is followed leaving the unearthing of
batting talent a hit and miss affair. There is no current development
model used to develop our youth batsman. Anything our kids do in the
lead up to competitive senior cricket is purely specific cricket skills
practice. A big emphasis is placed on winning and scoring as many runs
as possible rather than the long term development of future batsman.
Cricket Fitness realises not every child will become an elite level
test cricketer or a first class level cricketer. However a child can be
bought up learning more about the dynamics of batting as well as
becoming a more balanced all-round athlete. This will stand them in
good stead to stay in the game for the long term. The enjoyment factor
will be more evident due to their increased confidence in their own
abilities. They will also possess the potential to become even more
skilful in their specific cricket skills because of this increased
athleticism.
Your child, if involved in this program will actually focus on more
unspecific cricket activities which will allow a more balanced approach
to cricket development as well as becoming ambidextrous in cricket
skill adoption.
Former Australian cricket coaching legend John Buchanan was very keen
for Australian cricketers to possess these ambidextrous qualities and
this is one of the qualities all youngsters will possess when
graduating from our development program.
By having young athletes targeting a very skilled and specific program
for cricket you are actually inhibiting athletic development, skill
adaptation and skill mastery later on in their cricketing lives.
You also promote a very one sided athlete that can lead to potential
muscle imbalances and compensations later on in their cricket and
sporting lives. This in turn will leave them constantly battling injury
and restrict their potential to successfully adopt other sporting
interests if desired.
The program is a subtle blend of movement training, ambidexterity
facilitation as well as basic batting technique training. All of this
training is gradually progressed to keep the development of the
participants moving along and culminates in the graduation of the
batsman into senior cricket ranks with minimal technical deficiencies
and a complete athletic development.
Any more specific and complex batting skills the graduate is required
to learn from this point on will be easier to adopt as their will be no
movement restrictions or coordination difficulties to restrict them.
Leaving the young batsman to focus on expressing themselves freely by
displaying their skill and making quality batting decisions
instinctively. Rather than constantly trying to eradicate technical
deficiencies in their batting and losing the desire to bat and strive
for higher honours.
Cricket fitness has a structured developmental model that will be
followed allowing the process to be reliably effective and consistently
replicated for all participants. This is a long term development
program so if you are looking for a quick fix and immediate short term
success you are not at the right place.
